Christianity has a cost. To be a Christian are you willing to count that cost and then pay that cost? If Jesus is truly everything to you, you will. This series looks at "counting the cost" of discipleship through the eyes of an unbeliever who finds something refreshingly different in the life of a Christian friend. 1. WILLINGNESS -- (2KINGS 5:1-16) (6/6/2010) -- Every important commitment, whatever that commitment may be, has a cost. And you can't be willing to pay that cost if you don't first count that cost. In most cases the cost of a commitment is determined by someone else and not by us. We don't shape it. We don't change it. We don't determine it. The only two things we can do is count it and be willing to pay it and that's only if we want it.
2. WHAT I WANT -- (LUKE 14:28-35) (6/13/2010) -- Want health? Want wealth? Want prosperity? Want physical cures? Want financial freedom? Want out of your credit card debt? Want a better job? Want perfect relationships? Want power and authority? Want a nice house in a nice neighborhood? Want well-behaved children? Want a new car? Want a new spouse? Want money? Want your favorite sports team to win the championship? Want self-esteem? Want all your problems to go away? It's all about what YOU want, isn't it?
3. IT'S MY LIFE -- (LUKE 14:25-35) (6/20/2010) -- Do you set your own priorities because you're in charge of your own life? Does anyone tell you what to do? Do the priorities you set benefit you? It's really tough to get us out of the way! We really do love ourselves!
4. FAMILY FEUD -- (LUKE 14:25-27) (6/27/2010) -- Some people grow up in good, solid Christian homes. For them their family is proud the day they receive Christ as their Lord and Savior and are proud the day they are baptized before the church congregation. That's not always the case. Jesus says it may be just the opposite. Your family just may be your source of persecution.
5. DON'T TOUCH MY STUFF -- (LUKE 14:31-33) (7/4/2010) -- Back in the 80s female pop singer Madonna had a hit song called "Material Girl." Some words from that song are: "'Cause the boy with the cold hard cash is always Mister Right, 'cause we are living in a material world and I am a material girl." That pretty much sums it up for a large percentage of Americans. We are materialistic people.
6. MISTAKES 1, 2, & 3 -- (MATTHEW 19:16-22) (7/11/2010) -- Sally was not seeking eternal life but has inherited it through her belief, faith, and trust in Christ. Sally was not seeking escape from the eternal fire of hell but now has Jesus preparing a place for her in heaven. Sally was not seeking joy but now has found to be indwelled with the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Sally was not seeking peace in her life but now has a peace that surpasses all understanding. Sally was not seeking a healing but now has found her soul to be healed of the chains of sin. So what was she seeking?
7. FALLING AWAY -- (JOHN 6:60-71) (7/18/2010) -- An apostate is a person who falls away from the true faith, abandoning what they formerly professed to believe. One possible reason a person becomes an apostate is because they fail to count the cost of discipleship.
